Premier League in Europe

West Ham, still engaged in the Premier League relegation fight, will nevertheless be in a European cup semifinal for a second consecutive year. The Hammers won Thursday’s Europa Conference League match 4-1 over Gent to advance in the tournament as Michail Antonio found the net twice.

Manchester United was embarrassed in a 3-0 Europa League defeat to Sevilla. Harry Maguire and David De Gea were guilty of gaffes and the rest of the squad contributed little as the Red Devils exited European competition. After holding a two-goal lead with ten minutes remaining in last week’s first leg, the Red Devils conceded five consecutive goals to the Spanish side.

Manchester City will face Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinals. A 1-1 draw was more than sufficient on Wednesday to eliminate Bayern Munich 4-1 on aggregate. Erling Haaland scored his 48th goal of the season for Manchester City.

Real Madrid advanced with a second consecutive 2-0 win over Chelsea. Frank Lampard lost a fourth consecutive match since taking over as Chelsea manager. Chelsea’s problems in front of net continued as N’Golo Kante inexplicably fired wide on a clear and unmolested chance while Marc Cucarella took an eternity to settle the ball on a golden opportunity ultimately saved by Real Madrid, and former Chelsea, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
