Premier League in Europe

Champions League

Liverpool dominated Atletico Madrid in a 2-0 win at Anfield. The “mattress makers” went down to ten men in the first half and lost to the Reds for a second time in group stage. Manchester City easily rolled over Club Brugge in a 4-1 final while Chelsea was surprisingly only a 1-0 winner over Swedish side Malmo. Manchester United were staring at defeat versus Atalanta until Cristiano Ronaldo’s stoppage time goal salvaged a 2-2 final. Ronaldo scored in first half stoppage time as well as he carried the Red Devils through an otherwise poor team performance.

Europa and Conference League

West Ham stayed undefeated and clinched advancement to the tournament’s next round with a 2-2 draw at Gent in Europa League group play. Said Benrahma had a brace for the Hammers who were denied the win on a late own goal by Tomas Soucek. Leicester also drew their Europa League match in a 1-1 contest with Spartak Moscow at King Power Stadium. Jamie Vardy missed a second half penalty which would have given the Foxes the win. An early three goal advantage was nearly squandered by a wobbly defense as Spurs held on for a 3-3 Europa Conference League win against Vitesse in a rocky but ultimately successful debut for new Spurs manger Antonio Conte. A 59th minute red card assessed Cristian Romero made for a nerve racking second half for Spurs.
