Premier League Week 7 Results: Arsenal Takes Command; Chelsea Defeats Liverpool; Streaks End For Crystal Palace and Leeds; Amorim and Manchester United Get Much Needed Win; Haaland Leads Manchester City Over Bees; Wins Prove Tricky for Postecoglou and Trees

Concern could be turning to alarm for a Liverpool team which lost a third consecutive match in a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea. Stanford Bridge erupted when Brazilian teenager Estevao scored in the 95th minute for Chelsea off a picture-perfect pass from defender Marc Cucarella. It had been a difficult couple of weeks for Chelsea as well as Liverpool so the celebration of Estevao's first goal in Chelsea blue was understandably exuberant, even resulting in Manager Enzo Maresca being sent off. Liverpool, meanwhile, is left asking questions entering the break. Ineffective midfield acquisition Florian Wirtz was benched for the Stamford Bridge match. Trent Alexander-Arnold is sorely missed at right back. The reconstituted forward line has not delivered. After surviving a number of close calls early in the season, the pendulum has swung to Liverpool losing the close matches.

Arsenal has taken advantage and moved to the top of the Premier Table by a point over Liverpool with a 2-0 win over West Ham. Familiar names Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka scored for the Gunners after a stretch of matches where newcomers had driven results to keep Arsenal in the title chase. Arsenal was forced to test its depth once again when the oft injured Maritn Odegaard needed to be withdrawn for a third consecutive home match. No problem. Summer transfer Martin Zubimendi was brought on and Rice moved to a more advanced role from where he scored the icebreaker. Saka’s 67th minute penalty sealed the win with the sluggish Hammer attack barely landing a glove on the homestanding Gunners.

Mohammed Kudus, meanwhile, scored the winner for Tottenham Hotspur in a 2-1 win at Leeds for his first goal with his new club since leaving West Ham in the summer. Kudus, who also assisted on Spurs’ first goal by Mathys Tel, helped to end a 23 match home unbeaten streak by Leeds at Elland Road.

Another impressive unbeaten run came to an end over the weekend when Everton snapped the 19-match unbeaten run of Crystal Palace with a 2-1 win at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday. Jack Grealish won the match with his 93rd minute goal, his first with the Toffees after already providing four assists this season. The glorious run for the Eagles, which included two trophy wins, ended just days after they downed Dynamo Kyiv in the Europa Conference League on Thursday.

Manchester City moved past now sixth place Crystal Palace with the Citizens 1-0 defeat of Brentford. City is undefeated in seven matches across all competitions after striker extraordinaire Erling Haaland’s winner on Sunday marked the ninth consecutive match he has found the net across games for both club and country. The defeat of the Bees marked Manager Pep Guardiola’s 250th Premier League victory, a level of success only Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger had previously achieved.

Ruben Amorim won his 10th match as Manchester United Manager (in 34 tries) as the embattled Manchester United manager finally got something right when he made the bold decision to bench high priced summer acquisition Matheus Cunha in favor of Mason Mount. The former Chelsea man, who has also disappointed since joining the Red Devils under former manager Eric ten Hag two years ago, justified Amorim’s faith when Mount scored in the eighth minute of a 2-0 Manchester United victory over Sunderland. Normally a win at Old Trafford over a newly promoted side would be unremarkable. This victory, however, was much needed to relieve some of the pressure on Amorim who has posted abysmal results since joining United last season. Amorim and Red Devil supporters could also take some heart in a clean sheet by goalkeeper Senne Lammens in his Manchester United debut and a second goal of the season from another transfer, forward Benjamin Sesko.

Ange Postecoglou, meanwhile, continues to give Amorim a run for his money in the sack race as the Australian once again failed to win in his seventh match in charge at Nottingham Forest. Newcastle handled the Tricky Trees 2-0 as Bruno Guimaraes and Nick Woltemade scored to secure just the second win of the season for the Magpies.

Aston Villa notched its second win in two weeks with a 2-1 conquest over Burnley. Donyell Malen posted a brace to send Burnley to a fourth defeat in a five-match winless league run. The fading Clarets now look like a good bet for relegation while the league’s cellar dweller, Wolverhampton, is starting to look just a bit better. Wolves notched a second draw in as many matches with a 1-1 result versus Brighton, one week after taking a point with the same scoreline at Tottenham Hotspur. Wolves remain winless but are looking feistier.

Fulham, meanwhile, has lost back-to-back games by a 3-1 scoreline after the Cottagers relinquished a 1-0 lead after 70 minutes to lose 3-1 at Bournemouth. Antoine Semnyo had two of the Bournemouth goals to move his season total to six scores, a figure exceeded only by the nine goals of the Premier League’s top scorer Erling Haaland.
