Preseason Cups

Leicester's 1-0 defeat of Manchester City in the Community Shield saw Kelechi Iheanacho draw an 89th minute penalty and convert the winner against his former club. The goal was Iheanacho’s first in his ninth appearance versus his original team. The win by Leicester was exactly 50 years since their last Community Shield victory. Manchester City rested numerous starters, providing opportunity to a number of academy players. Making a second half appearance for City, to the delight of those fans in attendance, was the newly acquired Jack Grealish. Though the loss by Manchester City means little, the loss by Pep Guardiola’s men marked a fourth defeat in their last six matches across all competitions.

Chelsea faces Villareal Wednesday in UEFA’s Super Cup, pitting last season’s Champions League victors against the Europa League titlists. Chelsea returns to the Cup for a fifth time while Villareal makes its first appearance. The match will be played at National Stadium in Belfast, Northern Ireland in front of a COVID limited crowd of 13,000 fans. Chelsea will not be at full strength due to the number of players who have returned to late to training from the Euro Championship. Villareal Manager Unai Emery looks to place a Super Cup alongside his four Europa League trophies.
